Find answers to common questions about safety, operations, funding, and data protection policies.
No, this is an independent advocacy initiative organized by Western students and alumni. We are gathering verified student feedback and interest data. Once we prove there is significant demand and that it can be operated safely, we will present a formal proposal to Western University administration.
Active Western University undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni, staff, and faculty are all eligible to participate. To guarantee authentic responses and prevent double-voting, we require a valid Western Student ID and an email ending with @uwo.ca or @westernu.ca.
Your Student ID and email are strictly used for verification and duplicate prevention. Submissions are stored in an encrypted database using Row Level Security (RLS) policies. We will never sell or trade your personal information. Only aggregated stats (e.g. "85% of Engineering students support a pilot") are shared in reports.
The pilot program relies on strict "hub-only parking" enforced by geofencing. Users will not be allowed to lock their scooter or end their ride billing unless they have parked within a pre-approved parking zone (typically near building bike racks or painted bays). Scooters left outside hubs will continue to bill the rider and trigger a penalty fee.
Operations will run seasonally, usually from late March to November. During winter months, when ice and snow compromise road safety, the fleet will be collected, audited, and stored by the micromobility provider, meaning no scooters will remain on campus in the winter.
Every scooter contains a high-accuracy GPS unit. In dense pedestrian areas (such as UCC Plaza, concrete walkways, and UC Hill routes), speeds are automatically governed down to 10 km/h. On wider perimeter roads, speeds are capped at a standard 20 km/h.
There is no cost to Western University or its student associations. The selected third-party micromobility operator covers all capital expenditures, fleet operations, recharging, maintenance, and comprehensive liability insurance.
Yes, helmets are highly encouraged. We propose integrating physical helmets attached to scooters at key transit racks. Additionally, operators will run in-app "helmet-selfies" where taking a picture of yourself wearing a helmet before you start a ride unlocks safety credits for the rider.
We are currently collecting votes throughout the summer. In Fall 2026, we will compile a professional micromobility report summarizing the data and submit it to the Western University board and student unions for review. If approved, we hope to launch a pilot program in Spring 2027.
Every verified student response counts towards securing a safe transit alternative.
